About several months ago I cleaned out my denim closet and it was such a feel-good task because there were jeans that I hung on to way longer than I should have. I’m talking about the skin-tight low rise jeans that I haven’t worn or touched since my college days. They were fun to wear when I was in my 20s but they’re not exactly suitable for me now, not to mention I don’t fit into them anymore! Therefore, I wanted to start a new denim collection with pieces that would remain classic over the years.
After searching and trying on countless pairs of jeans I found my love, the Levi’s 501 Skinny. These have got to be the most classic and flattering pair of skinny jeans that I’ve come across and Levi’s has really got it figured out. For those of you who are not familiar with the Levi’s 501— here’s a quick overview.
For years, denim lovers have collected vintage 501s and custom-tailored them to fit. There are sites like RE/DONE that specializes in selling vintage Levi’s where they take the denim apart, repurpose the fabric, and redefine the traditional look of the Levi’s 501 to a more tapered modern twist. This new denim craze created such demands for vintage 501 Levi’s that a pair of jeans could go for $350.
THE LEVI’S 501 SKINNY
Fortunately, Levi’s picked up on this trend and realized they needed to fill the gap. They listened to their customers and introduced the 501 Skinny. Levi’s kept the best part of the 501 Original, like the button fly and 5 pockets, to keep with their heritage but customized it with a slimmer leg to give it an edge that reflects the current trend. To further fill the void, Levi’s created some really great washes for the new Skinny to look like a vintage pair of 501 jeans.
This new creation was the answer that everyone has been waiting for— a brand new pair of vintage-looking jeans that fit in all the right places, at half the cost of what you would normally pay for a pair of vintage jeans.
THE FIT
The 501 Skinny isn’t exactly your typical super-stretchy jegging style (like the ones I had in my closet). They feel more like a straight leg but the silhouette is so fresh and chic. Most of them are made with 100% cotton so they can be extremely tough to put on in the beginning.
When I bought mine I could barely button them up and they were super tight around the thighs and knees but don’t despair! These jeans will mold to your body with wear. I made the mistake of returning them for a larger size only to have them looking baggy around the butt and fly area by the end of the day.
So, I ended up returning them for my original size. Trust me, these jeans will mold to your body. After a few squats and wearing them around the house, the cotton gave some stretch and they fit like a dream now.
The 501 Skinny comes in 3 different inseams, 28, 30, and 32. I got the 28 inseams and had to get them tailored so they sit right above my ankles. If you get yours at one of the Levi’s stores, they offer tailoring services, be sure to ask them to keep the original hem so they look as natural as possible.

Levi’s really nailed it with the redesigned of the 501s. Unlike the skinny jeans I got rid of, the 501 Skinny is a wardrobe staple that I know will last for a very long time. These days, they’re all that I wear. Have you guys tried them yet? Drop me a line as I’d love to hear how they’re working out for you.
